Says “Silence is Deafening” on Planned Parenthood Fight
WASHINGTON, D.C. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has taken positions on Defense of Marriage Act, Obamacare, and even foreign aid programs. Now, American Life League (ALL), the nation’s oldest pro-life, Catholic grassroots organization, wonders why the USCCB has nothing to say about continued taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.
“Planned Parenthood is clearly the greatest enemy of innocent life in this country, committing one of every four abortions nationwide in 2009,” said Judie Brown, president of ALL. “Catholic teaching never mentions foreign aid but the Church’s position on abortion is crystal clear. We wonder why policy makers at the USCCB refuse to engage in the fight.”
American Life League staffers made repeated attempts without success over the past three weeks to reach out to the USCCB for a joint effort to stop taxpayer subsidies. Brown pointed to a statement from Bishop Blaire who said that, “Protecting human life is a first requirement” and a statement from the bishops of North Dakota who said that, even in charitable giving, Catholics should not “support or endorse” abortion organizations.
“Compared to such statements that are in line with unwavering Catholic teaching on the sanctity of life, the silence from USCCB on taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood is deafening,” she concluded.
