Next week we honor the millions of children slaughtered needlessly at the hands of abortionists. It’;s the perfect time to remember the importance of actions and the necessity of speaking for those who have been silenced. And, as we look around us at the March and in our homes, may we be energized by the faces and actions of those who dedicate their lives to the sanctity of every human being.
Peace begins at home. But what happens when we willfully destroy the home and the people in it? As a society, we are in trouble, for there is a war being waged upon us. And if we don’t arm ourselves properly, we will lose this war. But the reality is that we will lose so much more than that.
As another year closes, we take a few moments to reflect upon the blessings bestowed upon us. We offer a prayer of thanks for our faith, for the power of Our Lord, and for the people who have helped effect change. And we look forward to a year filled with many more blessings a year where we hope to see lives spared, hearts opened, and souls saved.
Recently, a meeting of the Pontifical Academy for Life occurred in Vatican City. It was suggested by some members of the Academy prior to the meeting that there could be a bit of “fireworks” due to the questionable statements that had been made by Academy President Archbishop Rino Fisichella during the previous year.
Though we may hear news stories that disturb us, let us not lose perspective. There are stories we rarely hear, stories of torture that happens every day in our country. We cannot forget the tiny cries that come from mouths that have been silenced all too soon.
In many things in life it’s prudent to have a backup plan a contingency for when things may not go as you had hoped or expected. Such is not the case when it comes to the life of a child. This child, created in the image and likeness of God, is a human being from the very moment he is created. Emergency contraception can take his life. And that is no backup plan.
Each day we have a choice. Follow where society seems to be leading away from morality and the laws of God or follow God. Yet we cannot simply be followers. We must also lead. We must lead our children, our grandchildren, our neighbors, our friends, and even people we don’t even know. Our society wants us to turn our backs on morality and live in the moment. But we know that we must live for eternity.
It’s no wonder people are confused and even ambivalent about the horrors of abortion. They receive mixed messages on a daily basis from organizations like Planned Parenthood, from the Obama administration, and from baby marketing companies that are just concerned with their bottom line. We have elected people whom we hope will vote pro-life. Now is the time to hold them to it.

I recently wrote an article, “I Lost My Daughter to Suicide: A Nurse’s Response to Brittany Maynard’s Campaign for Assisted Suicide,”1 hoping that there was a small chance of convincing her or other vulnerable people that suicide (assisted or unassisted) is never the answer to any problem.
Catholics all over were disappointed with the recent news about the reassignment of Cardinal Raymond Burke, and we can’t help but wonder what the future holds. Let us always remember his faith and his unwavering adherence to Church truths. And let us hold not only him, but the Church hierarchy, closely in our thoughts and prayers.
Much speculation, discussion, and outright confusion have abounded since the Synod on the Family last month. For many, it’s difficult to discern what actually took place and where the Catholic Church is headed. Today’s commentary offers clarification.
We are all created in the image and likeness of God. Because of His goodness, we are brought into the world. We are never to end a life, even because of a terminal disease. Many people and organizations will have us believe otherwise. They encourage us to die with “dignity” yet they don’t seem to truly understand the meaning of the word.
