Pro-Life This Week – March 15, 2019

Week in Review – Major Win for Life in Ohio; Beauty Brands Fund PP

On March 12, 2019, a federal appeals court in Cincinnati, Ohio, upheld a law that could block public funding for Planned Parenthood. The majority of the 6thCircuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the law as part of a legal battle spanning three years.

According to LifeSiteNews, last April, a three-judge panel of the 6thCircuit Court ruled that the state cannot forbid public funding to be withheld from any entity that commits or promotes elective abortions. If upheld, the ruling could have defunded 28 Planned Parenthood facilities and withheld almost $1.5 million from Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Southwest Ohio.

Judge Helene White is quoted as saying Planned Parenthood had a “due process right” to commit abortions, and that passing this law would violate Planned Parenthood’s “right not to be penalized in the administration of government programs based on protected activity outside the programs.”

However, on Tuesday the full 6thCircuit did not agree with her, with the majority of the panel voting to uphold the current law. This is a major win for the fight to end abortion in Ohio and a new precedent hopefully many states will follow.

Impactful sections of the majority opinion read:

“Private organizations do not have a constitutional right to obtain governmental funding to support their activities. The State also may choose not to subsidize constitutionally protected activities. “Just as it has no obligation to provide a platform for an individual’s free speech . . . it has no obligation to pay for a woman’s abortion.  Case after case establishes that a government may refuse to subsidize abortion services. . .

“[Planned Parenthood does] not have a Fourteenth Amendment right to perform abortions. The Supreme Court has never identified a freestanding right to perform abortions.”

Unfortunately, it was not all wins this week. Major cosmetic brands, MAC and Benefit Cosmetics, announced their partnerships with Planned Parenthood. These are the first makeup brands to ever take a stance on Planned Parenthood. MAC plans to donate $500,000 of their proceeds from their line of MAC VIVA GLAM lipsticks to Planned Parenthood’s national sex education program. MAC announced their support of the abortion provider in an Instagram post.

Benefit Cosmetics announced the addition of Planned Parenthood to the brand’s Bold Is Beautiful campaign. The brand plans on donating 100 percent of the proceeds from brow wax sales to organizations, including Planned Parenthood. This announcement was also made via Instagram.

ALL in the News – Pro-Aborts Hysterical in Alabama; Fake News on Twitter; Pro-Life Radio

In Judie Brown’s commentary this week, Pro-Aborts Hysterical in Alabama, Judie writes, “Alabaman Ryan Magers and his attorneys have done something groundbreaking in defense of babies killed by abortion. Magers is the father of a preborn child whose mother killed him—despite Magers’ vehement objections—by a medication abortion in 2017. The preborn child was in his sixth week of gestational development.”

Dwain Currier made some waves this week on ALL’s Twitter account. This week his tweets called out a lie in Alyssa Milano’s online video, where she claimed Title X forced physicians to withhold information from patients. This, of course, is false. Dwain’s comments were praised by online news outlet Twitchy.com  for being a voice of reason in a sea of crazy.
