Week in Review – New year, new politics, same attack on lives of preborn children
It’s 2019 and the anti-life forces are preparing for an escalated attack on preborn children and all who love them.
The new Congress took office this week and the leadership in the House wasted no time in its efforts to fund the abortion industry. As you are aware, the big problem in DC this week is the partial shutdown of the federal government. It has affected 600,000 federal employees and has been going on for two weeks. One would expect, then, that the first priority in Congress would be to get the shutdown ended. The president has said the main issue is funding for a border wall. That, you would think would be where the negotiations would focus.
However, on the first day of the new Congress, the House Democrats introduced a bill to end the shutdown and get the government open. The bill is the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2019, and it is over 1,000 pages long. Nothing in the bill addresses funding of a border wall in any meaningful way. However, Section 1071 of the bill will end Trump’s extended Mexico City Policy and give money back to international organizations that provide or promote abortions.
The language is: SEC. 7071. Assistance for nongovernmental organizations–Notwithstanding any other provision of law, regulation, or policy, a foreign nongovernmental organization shall not be ineligible for assistance appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act solely on the basis of health or medical services, including counseling and referral services, provided by such organization with non-United States Government funds if such services are permitted in the country in which they are being provided; and would not violate United States law if provided in the United States; and shall not be subject to requirements relating to the use of non-United States Government funds for advocacy and lobbying activities other than those that apply to United States nongovernmental organizations receiving assistance appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act. In addition, this same section directs that “not less than $37,500,000” shall be made available for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
There you have it. The country has an immediate problem with financing the government, and all the new House is worried about is getting funding to Planned Parenthood and the UNFPA—two pro-abortion entities. It’s going to be a long two years!
The federal level is not the only place pro-lifers have to worry about. In California, for example, leaders in the legislature seem ready to push a bill that the now ex-governor vetoed last year. The bill would require that every campus of the University of California and the California State University provide medication abortion (the abortion pill) free to any student who wants it. This would effectively turn every public university campus in California into an abortuary.
Meanwhile, Governor Cuomo in New York is promising to push his Reproductive Health Act, which would codify the landmark Roe v. WadeSupreme Court decision in New York State, as a priority during the next 30 days.
These are just some examples of the major fights that are facing all who recognize the fact that all human beings are created by God and are endowed by Him with the right to life from the very first moment of his or her existence. To get ready for 2019 and all the struggles that will face us, we encourage every reader to establish or strengthen his or her prayer life. The eventual victory in this fight will come from God. We must act as if everything depends on us and pray as if everything depends on God. Prayer and Action—the keys to success in 2019.

Action Item of the Week – March for Life in 2 weeks!
The annual March for Life in Washington, DC, takes place on January 18, 2019—just two weeks from today. If you have not made your plans to attend, NOW is the time to do so.
The theme for this year’s March is “Unique from Day One: Pro-Life is Pro-Science.”
Jeanne Mancini, president of March for Life, expanded on the theme, saying, “Science is behind the pro-life movement. We see that medical and technological advancements always affirm the pro-life movement, for example, DNA is present at fertilization and no fingerprint on earth, past, present, or future, is the same. We know, too, a baby’s heart beats at just six weeks and we can distinctly observe it ourselves with ultrasound technology. As science progresses, we see clearly that every life is unique from day one.”
The 46th annual March for Life will be held on January 18, 2019. You can join with hundreds of thousands of fellow pro-lifers. Check you local churches and pro-life organizations to see if seats are still available on the buses.
The March for Life Rally will take place at noon at 12th Street on the National Mall, in between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive. Following the Rally, the March will begin on Constitution Avenue between 12th and 14th Streets at approximately 1:00 pm.
