Robert George to Celebrate Life magazine: There's no time to lose in the fight for life Washington, D.C. – In an exclusive interview with American Life League's Celebrate Life magazine, Robert P. George, Princeton's McCormick professor of jurisprudence and member of the President's Council on Bioethics, offers timely advice for pro-life Americans on the eve of the 33rd anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions.
"Now that we at least have the possibility of overturning Roe v. Wade on the horizon, we should be thinking about a unified strategy," George advised. "A lot of harm has come to the pro-life movement, because we've spent so much time fighting amongst ourselves over the years."
In a wide-ranging interview in the January/February 2006 issue of Celebrate Life, George speaks of devoting much of his career to securing the right to life. Now that the Supreme Court is changing personnel and the Right to Life Act is before Congress, his pursuit is more urgent than ever.
"There's a real division between elite and popular opinion," said George. "Elite opinion is exemplified in the journalistic establishment, the professoriate and the major professional associations… The trouble is that while legislatures by and large tend to reflect popular opinion, the courts reflect elite opinion. The courts frequently grab power to impose elite ideology on a public that by and large rejects it.
"I wish that modern presidents would follow President Lincoln's example and stand up to the Supreme Court when it usurps the power of our elected representatives and violates the Constitution in whose name the justices purport to speak," he said.
"Delays I cannot accept," George stressed as he outlined a realistic and constitutional battle plan. Read the entire text of "Robert George: No time to lose in the fight for life" in Celebrate Life online.
