Washington, D.C. (24 February 2009) – The Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood’s research arm, released a pitch today for more taxpayer funding for ‘family planning services’ – contraception and abortion. Every dollar spent on ‘family planning programs’ saves the American people $4, the study says.
The following is a statement from Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League:
"Parroting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s infamous gaffe that fewer babies via contraception will reduce state cost, the Guttmacher Institute now says every tax dollar spent eliminating "unwanted" babies will save the American people $4 in childcare and other costs.
"While Guttmacher is crunching the numbers on how much each American baby will cost, we ask – can we afford a culture so devoid of humanity we have calculated the cost/benefit analysis of a human being’s life?
"Under the guise of unbiased research, Guttmacher’s study is a well-timed and self-serving sales pitch for Planned Parenthood’s political and business goals – more money for birth control – Planned Parenthood’s chief source of income.
"The opportunistic Guttmacher Institute is playing to the American people’s fear of economic collapse in an effort to devalue the lives of America’s poorest citizens. Put the poor on birth control, the study argues, and then we don’t have to deal with their children. 'It is not hyperbole to say that the advent of modern contraception changed American life,' Guttmacher says.
"We couldn’t agree more. In fact, it’s destroying American life.
"Perhaps Planned Parenthood can donate some of their $114.8 million (2006-2007) profit to programs that empower the poor instead of sterilizing them as undesirables."
American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to death.
