Washington, D.C. (11 July 2008) – Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Martin Luther King, Jr., will lead a coalition of pro-life black leaders from around the country July 14 at the 99th annual NAACP Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. The group will demand that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People oppose federal funding of Planned Parenthood – an organization it says has been racist from the very beginning.
"We congratulate these black leaders for courageously exposing the racist roots of Planned Parenthood," said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. "More and more African-Americans recognize the link between racism and abortion – the civil rights movement and the pro-life movement. They know that until we protect all human life equally, no one is safe from the tyranny of racism and hatred."
Dr. Alveda King, like her revered uncle before her, has dedicated much of her life to the civil rights movement, specifically defending the preborn, which she has called "the most compelling issue of all." She joins activists from the National Black Pro-Life Union, the National Pro-Life Black Caucus and the Life Education and Resource Network among others.
Noting that huge majorities of abortion mills are located in African-American neighborhoods, the group is calling for the NAACP to oppose the over 300 million dollars in taxpayer funding Planned Parenthood receives every year.
Last month, when the group demonstrated at the Washington, D.C. headquarters of the Republican and Democratic National Committees, it demanded that political candidates refuse campaign donations from Planned Parenthood.
However, its appearance at the NAACP will focus on the NAACP's support for abortion.
One activist, Stephen Broden, pastor of an inner-city church in Texas, told CitizenLink.org that, if the black community did nothing to stop abortion, "We are headed toward extinction… I know that's pejorative and hyperbole for some people, but it's reality for me as a pastor as I sit in the inner city and pastor these people. I see something ugly coming around the corner if we don't stop abortion now."
