American Life League executive director Shaun Kenney issued the following statement today regarding the news that Democrat leaders are backing away from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's stated plan to "reduce costs to the states and to the federal government" by shoveling millions of dollars slated for contraception in the economic stimulus package.
"Pelosi's long record of support for pro-abortion policies continues to mislead and distort Catholic teaching on the sanctity of human life.
"While the family planning component Pelosi is championing in the economic stimulus package remains, we are mildly surprised to see President Obama place pressure on Pelosi to drop that component.
"Likewise, American Life League strongly applauds Rep. John Boehner and others for standing up against Pelosi's targeted attack on life – an attack that offends millions of Catholic Americans and misleads thousands more.
"Rep. Pelosi's actions expose her ideological preference for abortion in contradiction to her professed Catholicism. Such a radical position misleads millions of Catholics and non-Catholics alike about what the Church teaches on the primacy of human life.
"American Life League continues to strongly encourage Archbishop George Hugh Niederauer of San Francisco to enforce Canon 915, withholding the Eucharist from Rep. Pelosi until her pastoral leaders and fellow Catholics can be assured she does not intend to dually promote pro-abortion policies as an 'ardent, practicing Catholic.'"
