Washington, DC —Judie Brown, president of American Life League, issued the following statement:
Recent revelations about the activities of Catholic Relief Services once again give us pause to wonder. How effective will the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) be in its opposition to the Obama/HHS contraceptive mandate when actions like those of CRS go unpunished?
How can a Catholic charity align itself with proponents of the culture of death mentality and remain Catholic? Why aren’t the bishops drawing a line in the sand and making it clear to such groups that their identity as Catholic organizations and charities precludes alliances with evil?
Here are some simple actions the bishops can take today: Demand that CRS begins calling itself the Relief Services of America or cease making grants to pro-contraception organizations; remove Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) from its oversight, rename it Campaign for Human Development and make it clear that this agency may not call itself Catholic until such time as all entities within the CCHD comply 100 percent with Catholic teaching; and instruct the Catholic Hospital Association to rename itself the Hospital Association of America until such time as it and all of its allies comply totally with Catholic teaching.
By taking these simple steps, the USCCB has taken a giant step toward alerting Obama that it really does mean business. Anything else is simply politics as usual.
