Washington, D.C. (26 February 2009) – American Life League celebrated Thursday the first personhood amendment in the nation's history to pass a state Senate.
Personhood Amendment, SB 406, passed 26 to 24 in the Montana State Senate Feb. 26.
Introduced by Montana State Sen. Dan McGee, SB 406 states "all persons are born free and have certain inalienable rights .. person means a human being at all stages of human development of life, including the state of fertilization or conception, regardless of age, health, level of functioning, or condition of dependency."
American Life League president Judie Brown issued the following statement:
"Personhood is catching fire around the country. Less than two weeks ago, North Dakota’s House of Representatives recognized all human beings as persons and now Montana is following suit with passage of the first Personhood Amendment.
"This is a historic moment for the personhood movement. At long last, the pro-life community is recognizing that, until we establish civil rights and personhood for all human beings, we cannot have justice in this country. We have taken an important step toward fulfillment of the civil rights movement.
"North Dakota and Montana have given us great hope. We pledge to work not only for personhood in every state, but also for a Federal [Human] Personhood Amendment to the United States Constitution. We will not rest until the rights of every human being from creation until death are guaranteed and protected under the law."
