Pelosi Deserves Margaret Sanger Award

Washington, DC—-On March 27, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi accepted Planned Parenthood’s highest honor, the Margaret Sanger Award. The award was created to honor the legacy of Margaret Sanger, a birth control activist and the founder of Planned Parenthood.

American Life League, the oldest Catholic pro-life education and advocacy group in the nation, issued this statement:

“Modern apologists for the abortion industry whitewash Sanger’s true motivation behind birth control. Sanger’s work was never about women’s health or rights. She was a leader in the eugenics movement, a so-called science that deals with the improvement of hereditary qualities of a race or breed by control of human mating.

“Sanger wanted to control the births of people she deemed as unfit, mentally defective, or having little value. She called the poor, the minorities, and the uneducated the weeds of society.

“In 1920, the year before she founded the American Birth Control League, which later became Planned Parenthood, Sanger published her book Women and the New Race.

“Sanger wrote, ‘Birth control itself, often denounced as a violation of natural law, is nothing more or less than the facilitation of the process of weeding out the unfit, of preventing the birth of defectives or of those who will become defective.’

“A rich, white, progressive like Pelosi, Sanger also dressed up her goal to eliminate the weeds of society as ‘women’s rights.’

“This is the award Pelosi eagerly accepted. And this is the recognition Pelosi richly deserves.”
