Obamacare Mandates May Cause Diocese to Drop Healthcare Insurance
Washington, DC – Washington, D.C. — Bishop Robert Lynch of St. Petersburg announced during Red Mass that, rather than violate Catholic teaching, the diocese will no longer provide health insurance to its 2,300 employees. The Obama administration’s proposed implementation of healthcare legislation, almost without meaningful religious exemption, mandates that all insurance cover contraception, sterilization, and so-called “morning after pill” or “emergency contraception”–terms that Catholics and many pro-life groups say are euphemisms for medical abortion.
Judie Brown, president of American Life League, the nation’s oldest Catholic pro-life advocacy organization, issued the following statement:
President Obama has repeatedly used pro-abortion Catholics like HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to provide political cover for his anti-Catholic policies. Bishop Lynch deserves praise for his courage in publicly taking a stand for Catholic teaching against yet another regulatory attack on the people and faith of the Catholic Church. As leader of American Life League, an organization that calls on all Catholic bishops to defend the faith against political compromise, I personally thank His Excellency for showing such leadership.
