Komen Funding of Planned Parenthood Called “Confusing”
Over the past week, multiple pro-life organizations have noted American Life League research documenting the financial connection between Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Planned Parenthood. This led to the Southern Baptist Convention’s LifeWay publishing division recalling pink Bibles meant to raise money for Komen. The Tennessean reported that LifeWay president Thomas Rainer explained, “It is not in keeping with LifeWay’s core values to have even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood.”
Paul E. Rondeau, executive director of American Life League, issued the following statement:
We have not had contact with LifeWay but we have, on more than one occasion, attempted to persuade Susan G. Komen for the Cure that giving funds meant to save lives to an organization that is in the business of terminating lives is a bad idea especially since Komen knows full well that Planned Parenthood does not, in fact, provide mammograms. It only refers people to real health clinics that have the equipment and medical professionals trained and licensed to provide mammograms.
The only breast screening service Planned Parenthood offers is the equivalent to a self exam that most women do at home in the shower. While approximately 40,000 women died of breast cancer in 2009, Planned Parenthood terminated the lives of 332,000 preborn children that same year.
Why Komen would stain its reputation by choosing an organization that has been investigated for fraud and failure to report child rape—and that runs the world’s largest abortion chain—as its select provider of breast care is confusing.
American Life League thanks LifeWay and Mr. Rainer for taking this action. The pro-life community and preborn babies everywhere can be grateful for LifeWay’s courageous move that helps defend the intrinsic human rights of every human person.
