Holy Thursday Reminder: Catholics Can’t Publicly Support Abortion and Receive the Eucharist

Commemoration of Last Supper Shines Spotlight on ‘Complicit’ Wrongdoing by Church Leaders

(April 10, 2025 – Fredericksburg, Virginia) On Holy Thursday, Catholics commemorate the Last Supper, remembering Jesus’ institution of the Eucharist. American Life League president Judie Brown believes this is the perfect time to emphasize three universal truths about Catholic doctrine when it comes to abortion.

Those truths are simple, according to Brown:

  • Catholics in public life cannot be pro-abortion and receive the Eucharist.
  • Catholics in public life who have not repented of their support for contraception, abortion, IVF, euthanasia, and assisted suicide should not receive the Eucharist.
  • Catholics who do not repent of this are not only ignoring their state of grave sin but are putting their immortal soul in grave danger.

“The Catholic Church teaches that abortion is a terrible and horrific wrong that has no place in Catholicism,” stated Brown. She directs attention to the Catholic Code of Canon Law, specifically Canon 915, which reads: “Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”

Therefore, according to Brown, the Holy Thursday recognition of the institution of Holy Communion — the Eucharist — is the perfect time to turn attention to Canon 915.

Brown laments that so few Church leaders have made the teaching of Canon 915 clear.

“Bishops and priests should be proclaiming this truth from the pulpit, teaching it in catechism classes, and publishing it in church bulletins,” said Brown. “By their silence regarding the truth of Canon 915 they are complicit in this wrongdoing.”

Brown speaks with authority on the matter, having served under two popes on the Pontifical Academy for Life, which under the direction of the head of the Roman Catholic Church, is dedicated to promoting a consistent life ethic.

She also cites the teaching of the late Fr. James Buckley, FSSP, who regularly explained that there is an obligation to focus attention on those Catholic politicians who support abortion and claim to be Catholics in good standing.

American Life League urges faithful Catholics to speak up about the blatant disconnect between the Church’s pro-life doctrine and the blind eye often turned toward elected officials who call themselves Catholic while freely promoting abortion, which the Catholic Church declares to be an abhorrent mortal sin.
