“With the addition of the 100th Congressional sponsor to the Right to Life Act, the pro-life movement has reached an important milestone in our quest to end the slaughter of innocent preborn children by abortion,” said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “This bill is the most important piece of pro-life legislation under consideration today. In an instant it could restore personhood to the preborn child and bring an end to abortion in this country.”
The Right to Life Act (H.R. 552), which was introduced in 2005 by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), establishes “equal protection under the 14th article of the Constitution for the right to live of each born and preborn human person.” “Establishing personhood for the preborn baby is the only way we will see a concrete end to decriminalized abortion in this country,” said Brown.
The bill has been assigned to the House Judiciary Committee and is currently awaiting hearings. “The bi-partisan support for this bill signals a groundswell in Congress for a permanent end to abortion in America. Such a goal can only be achieved by restoring personhood to preborn children,” said Brown. “After 33 years of gnawing at the edges of legal protection for abortion, now is the time for a substantive challenge to the status quo. Without total protection under the law, preborn children will continue to die.”
According to Brown, the Right to Life Act does not compromise pro-life principles; it contains no exceptions. “For the first time in years,” said Brown, “we have a politically significant number of supporters in Congress who are willing to stand up for life. Now is the time to act.
“We look forward to seeing support for this bill from every elected official who describes himself as pro-life. Rhetorical claims may garner votes, but now is the time for action. We challenge each pro-life member of Congress to act fearlessly and immediately by supporting this bill and joining a call for committee hearings. It is their responsibility to strive to bring an end to the heinous act of abortion,” said Brown.
