‘Church Lady’ Throws Down Gauntlet on Blasphemous Bill Maher

Washington, D.C. (7 October 2008) – American Life League president Judie Brown, self-professed Catholic "church lady," has decided "Religulous" star Bill Maher needs a catechism lesson.

"Blaspheming God is a mortal sin," Brown said. "Maher may say he doesn't believe in God, but the man doth protest too much."

Maher's film, released Oct. 3, is a "mockumentary" of all things religious. The infamously profane HBO host of "Real Time with Bill Maher" has made a career of religion bashing. He previously called down the wrath of Catholics around the country and American Life League in particular with his profane and bigoted screeds against the Catholic Church, the Pope and Christianity.

To date over 31,000 people have signed the FireBillMaher.com petition calling for his termination from HBO in connection with crude and slanderous comments made in April about Pope Benedict XVI and Catholics in general – all 1 billion of them.

"How does the Catholic Church get away with all of their buggery? If you have a few hundred followers and you let some of them molest children, they call you a cult leader. If you have a billion, they call you 'Pope,'" Maher said after referring to the Pope as a Nazi.

"Religulous," his latest attack on all religions, was released to rave reviews from Hollywood elite – Variety magazine calls the film "brilliant," and "incendiary." In the film, Maher travels the world interviewing inane people he classifies as prime examples of religious believers.

"With sickening snobbery, Maher avoids any substantive commentary and instead employs grade school shock humor to prey on people he considers intellectually inferior," Brown said. "Maher's obvious preoccupation with disproving religion and ridiculing the religious tell me he's fascinated by it. Perhaps Maher is just looking for an invitation. I would be more than happy to sit down with him for a candid conversation about the Faith."

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to death.
