American Life League president Judie Brown issued the following statement in response to President Bush's veto of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act:
American Life League commends President Bush for his veto of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. If passed, this legislation would have advanced the unconscionable act of killing preborn persons. Despite the misinformation campaign that has been waged about human embryonic stem cell research, the bottom line remains that terminating the lives of innocent human embryos for research is ethically and morally corrupt. Such an act is nothing short of murder.
While we haven’t always been in total agreement with President Bush, the pro-life community should applaud today’s veto. We encourage the president to take additional steps designed to protect all innocent human beings’ lives.
There are viable and effective alternatives to human embryonic stem cell research that must be expanded. Stem cells obtained from umbilical cord blood and adult tissues are but two of the morally acceptable avenues that have shown great promise.
Any person who considers himself pro-life must recognize the inhumanity of human embryonic stem cell research and persuade lawmakers to bring this practice to an end. We can never build a true culture of life when we allow the most vulnerable and innocent of our society to be sacrificed.
