Washington, DC—-In a recent interview with David Gregory on Meet the Press, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, past president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, lamented that U.S. bishops want to be the president’s “greatest supporters” and “cheerleaders” in regard to healthcare. After reading the interview, Father William Kuchinsky, a diocesan priest and member of the board of directors of American Life League, issued an open letter to Cardinal Dolan.
Judie Brown, president and cofounder of ALL, issued this statement regarding the open letter:
“We are honored to have the spiritual wisdom and insights of Father William Kuchinsky. His ‘open letter’ to Cardinal Dolan reminds us, ‘We are now standing in the face of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has ever experienced. I do not think that the wide circle of the American society, or the whole wide circle of the Christian Community realizes this fully.’
“Father Kuchinsky also notes that President Obama is the leader of the party whose platform states, ‘The Democratic party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to . . . safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay. We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.’
“It is hard for us to imagine why Cardinal Dolan, a prince of the Church, would suggest that Catholics in general want to be cheerleaders for such an administration, regardless of the party name.It is our sincere hope that all Catholics and people of good will will reflect on the words written by Fr. Kuchinsky and understand the immensity of the enemy we face as Christians.”
