(May 8, 2025 – Fredericksburg, Virginia) As the world meets Pope Leo XIV, American Life League urges the new supreme pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church to leverage his historic role as the first American pope to infuse Catholic hearts with conviction and passion for protecting mothers and preborn children from the evils of abortion.

American Life League president Judie Brown, a three-time member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, sees Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost’s American roots as giving the new pope a unique opportunity to lead the United States back to a higher moral ground, especially in the matter of abortion, which Catholic doctrine teaches is an abhorrent mortal sin.

“During my years on the Pontifical Academy for Life, I witnessed both St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict strive to create a culture that loved and adored life, just as our Lord does,” shared Brown. “My hope and prayers are that Pope Leo XIV will follow in their footsteps and embrace the Church with that same humble love for all humanity.”

Brown, who served the Church under both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict, noted that throughout history, popes bearing the name “Leo” have been strong leaders of the faith who guided the Church with strength and dignity.

“We join Catholics worldwide in celebrating our new Pope Leo XIV,” stated American Life League national director Katie Brown Xavios. “This is a historic event for both America and the Catholic Church.”

“American Life League joins the millions of Catholics praying that the new pope will carry those same values and lead the Church into sanctity-of-life-honoring unity and a renewed love for the faith,” stated Xavios.
