Washington, D.C. (10 July 2008) – American Life League applauds the members of the U.S. House of Representatives who, on Wednesday evening, called for the defunding of Planned Parenthood.
Calling it a "big box retailer of big abortion," Reps. Michelle Bachmann, Chris Smith, Jim Jordan, Bill Sali, Mike Pence and six other members of Congress blasted Planned Parenthood's abortion industry and called for an immediate cutoff of federal funding for it.
"I rise today to highlight the practices of an industry that is characterized by death, deception and depression – the abortion industry," said Rep. Joseph Pitts of Pennsylvania. "The abortion industry is a billion-dollar business."
Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League, commended the courage and character of those representatives willing to stand up against Planned Parenhood. "Forty-five percent of the House voted against Planned Parenthood funding last year, and clearly the outpouring of sentiment against Planned Parenthood in the Special Order shows that members of Congress are beginning to understand the evils of Planned Parenthood," he said. "We are elated that members of the House are officially condemning Planned Parenthood and hope this will translate into the end of taxpayer funding for the nation's largest abortion chain."
Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, who introduced an amendment last year to prohibit Planned Parenthood from receiving any Title X money, said, "The largest abortion provider in America is the largest recipient of federal funding under Title X. Let's take decisive action to defund Planned Parenthood."
Explaining how Planned Parenthood uses the money allocated to it through Title X funding to perpetuate its business agenda, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan said, "Planned Parenthood is using your tax dollars to raise more money to run against your candidate, to elect someone who will give them more tax dollars."
Making the case that Planned Parenthood is a business masquerading as a tax-exempt organization, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said, "Not only does this organization not pay taxes, like other businesses, but one-third of the hundreds of millions they get comes from tax dollars."
Idaho Rep. Bill Sali added, "An accounting gimmick masks the way Planned Parenthood uses federal dollars to fund its abortion services."
New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith, who called the Special Order, summarized the entire discussion by saying, "Abortion is big business, and it's destroying the next generation of Americans, and you and I, Mr. Speaker, are subsidizing it."
