Washington, D.C. (28 April 2009) – Judie Brown, president of American Life League, issued the following statement regarding Xavier University’s invitation to radical abortion supporter Donna Brazile to speak and receive an honorary degree at the school’s May 9 commencement ceremonies:
"There is an epidemic of dissent among educational institutions that claim to have a Catholic identity while they actively work to undermine Church teaching.
"In the past month, the University of Notre Dame, Xavier University and Georgetown University have given platforms and honors to the most extreme pro-abortion activists of our time. This behavior is incompatible with their identification as Catholic institutions.
"They should be removed immediately from The Official Catholic Directory (the “Kenedy Directory”) until they have reaffirmed their commitment to Catholic doctrine and Catholic social teaching – the foundation of which is the human personhood of the preborn.
"It is time for Catholics to draw a line in the sand: No more will we tolerate so-called Catholic institutions working to destroy the faith through active participation in the culture of death."
American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to death.
