Supermodel Chrissy Teigen’s recent actions appear so out of sync with the humane treatment of our fellow human beings that we had to stop and take a closer look.
Last week, Teigen visited abortion activists in Idaho, lending her voice to their efforts to pass an abortion initiative that would create a statutory right to abortion. If passed, this proposal would undo all laws in the state that in some way protect the preborn child from being aborted.
This all stems from the loss of her preborn son, Jack, several years ago.
According to media, Teigen “didn’t know” she was having an abortion when she lost her son (she actually wasn’t). She said, “One thing that was hard for me was that I never experienced any pain in it so I never thought of it as being anything other than a miscarriage. . . . We hear the word abortion, we think there’s some kind of pain with it. . . . Nowhere in those days in the hospital getting blood transfusions did I think that I was in danger of losing this baby because I was in no pain.”
She and husband John Legend experienced a tragic loss. Of that there is no doubt. But, according to Live Action, “No one—not Teigen, Legend [her husband], or their doctors—intentionally sought to cause Jack’s death. His death was unable to be prevented, despite medical interventions to save his life and to protect Teigen’s.” It explains, “Teigen had originally been placed on bed rest due to issues with the placenta, and eventually, was admitted to the hospital due to bleeding. Her son Jack remained healthy at first. But eventually, there were catastrophic complications, and Jack died—and by Teigen’s own admission, doctors did everything they could to save him.”
The article continues, “Over two years later, and only after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision overturned Roe v. Wade, Teigen began to describe the experience as an abortion, saying her husband—singer John Legend—was the one who made her see it that way.”
So how can it be that the heartbreaking experience of Jack’s death has become a springboard for Teigen’s abortion activism, even though her miscarriage was never an abortion?
This recent action by a Hollywood diva is about a great deal more than one state and its volleyball game over whether abortion should be legal. At its very center, this situation exposes an egregious disconnect between the people’s view of preborn children as human beings and media pressure to enable abortion at any time for any reason anywhere in this nation. In fact, in large part because of media misconduct, more than half of us support abortion, at least according to Pew Research.
This is so because the baby is absent from the discussion, even when babies like Jack die from unexpected complications that have nothing to do with decriminalized abortion. And perhaps that is the most curious aspect of Teigen’s love affair with abortion rights. Losing her son appears to have propelled her into the arena where abortion is acceptable and pro-life perspectives are scorned. One would have hoped Teigen might have noted this disconnect, but sadly she has become part of the abortion advocacy cadre, even though miscarriage has never been abortion or vice versa.
America has chosen to glorify abortion, but at the point that a woman chooses to engage in sexual relations with a male, the die is cast. If a preborn baby is procreated because of her choice, that child should never be killed. But alas, that too is a “choice.”
In a perfect world, this would never be the case, but in our skewed meanderings about sex and reproduction, women are viewed as independent of their initial choices when it becomes apparent that someone else is residing in her womb. And that, in a word, is the problem.
When the feminist publication Ms. feeds readers disjointed opinions on pregnancy care centers while pumping up abortion rights, the crowd goes wild in support of what we can only define as absolute bias against lifesaving, life-affirming ministries like crisis pregnancy centers. CPCs function as a lifeline for those women who need affirmation of their motherhood and deterrence from aborting their children. Using clinical facts and compassionate counseling should never be a butt of anti-life rhetoric, yet today the most vociferous in our midst would suggest that the only acceptable preborn child is a dead one.
So much for fairness.
Getting back to Teigen, we have but one word for her: love! Thinking about Jack, we remember these words from Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians as we pray that somehow Teigen hears them as well: “Love does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but finds its joy in the truth.”
The truth: a source of joy and a source of recognition of the humanity of every person, including the preborn baby.
Every person begins her life according to nature’s perfect design. Abortion defies nature, ignores logic, violates human decency, and slays innocents.
