Recent events remind us of how seriously flawed the thinking in our society has become, even in the face of evil itself. The Truth is inevitably left to twist in the wind as crimes go unpunished and personal choices become moored in a sea of moral relativism. Andrew Daub, cofounder of Team Iron Will, once wrote, “A better way to describe moral relativism is moral apathy—the absence of truth, interest, emotion, feeling or concern in regard to morals. It’s feeling blah about right or wrong—too lazy or uninterested to make a decision.”
Reading headlines like “From Abortion to Euthanasia: How Will Pope Leo XIV Respond to the Culture of Death?” give us a clue into the modern version of ethical confusion. Instead of using the headline to underscore the fact that mortal sin exists, today’s Catholic commentators prefer to massage truth into oblivion. This sort of mumbo jumbo runs deep, creates confusion, and attempts to extinguish virtue.
Yet not everyone at the Vatican is confused about human dignity. Archbishop Ettore Balestrero, apostolic nuncio and Permanent Observer to the United Nations, seems to understand the dignity of every person. He recently said, “A person is not defined by his or her consciousness, intellect, or abilities. . . . These qualities may weaken or even disappear, but the person’s dignity does not fade with them.” He continued, “Dignity is God-given [and] dependence and frailty do not negate or obscure such dignity; rather, they are a manifestation of the human condition.”
His words are genuine, whereas those of human beings at sea in a moral quagmire don’t have a handle on such simple truths.
This is why we hear terms like reproductive freedom, an expression designed to mask the deadly agenda of those who believe that there is no God! Groups like Planned Parenthood spin a yarn that women’s choices should not be encumbered by morality. For these folks, abortion is nothing more than the removal of a loose tooth.
No wonder there is so much agony in our world today.
Just turn your attention to the Lindsay Clancy case. The woman took the lives of her three children, and a holdout juror resisted the majority, who had hoped to find her “not criminally responsible.” A LifeNews article explained that “pro-life writers have called that reaction a moral inversion: compassion for a mother who killed her children, with far less public focus on Cora, Dawson and Callan [Clancy’s children] themselves.”
We see it as far worse than that because, where human dignity is measured by mental states, ages, and place of residence, including the womb, morality has evaporated into the ether of amorality. There is no justice in such a state of existence, whether it be for the preborn child, the dying person, or the three children murdered by their own mother.
When human dignity is being negated by a society hell-bent on placing personal rights above the moral law, nothing good can result. Is it any wonder that children are challenging their parents as they clamor to alter their gender? Are we not overcome by the tragedy of dying patients being converted into organ farms even as they are still alive?
Where will this madness end, and why is it so difficult for the world to see? To that we have a simple response: When God and His laws are abandoned and truth is set aside in favor of majority rule, all sorts of tragic occurrences will crowd out our ability to see the careening track mankind’s future is on now.
It is not that man has lost his sense of God, it is more that he has defied God. And so it is that men and women have chosen in so many cases to ignore Our Father and His laws, choosing instead to twist in the wind created by their personal agendas, which have become the only gods that matter to them.
