Remembering Olga Fairfax

Paul and I first met Olga at a pro-life conference in 1981. She was, as my mother-in-law would say, an “odd duck.” She wore hats and never introduced herself as a Methodist minister; instead, she proudly stated her pro-life credentials, even if you never asked about them. She was one of the most energetic defenders of life I have ever known.

She took to the streets with her message, called total strangers her friends, and never met a stranger she didn’t like, which made her one of the most charming, pleasant pro-life leaders you have ever met. She used to tell her audience that she was blessed by God to do His work. Her devotion to the preborn child was unwavering.

During a recent visit to an abortion mill, at the age of 83, mind you, Olga was physically attacked by an abortion supporter. Olga was carrying a pro-life sign at the time, and apparently her assailant was not supportive of free speech. Fairfax suffered terribly because of this attack, and as she told a reporter, was still sore four days after an assault that was not even addressed by law enforcement. Fairfax called her attack elder abuse.

In retelling the story of this incident to pro-life LifeSiteNews, Olga said, “For fifty years I’ve been in this war. Before this war is over, we ourselves will see our blood spilled on the sidewalk. . . . It’s a war: God against Satan, good against evil.”

That is how this valiant warrior for life lived her faith in truth. We mourn the loss of our dear friend, Olga Fairfax. God bless you, my dear friend.

Thank you, Lord, for Olga! Let us pray for the happy repose of her soul and ask the Lord to inspire each one of us to bear witness to His truth with the same tenacity he instilled in Fairfax, our sister in Christ.
