According to Wikipedia, “Dragon’s Breath” is a type of pyrotechnic shotgun round that produces a visual effect “similar to that of a short-ranged flamethrower.”
That’s the same effect President Obama’s latest crippling conscience protection regulations for health care bring to mind. As Jill Stanek reported in her article, “Sorry, baby: Obama administration to force pro-life hospitals, medical professions to dispense hormonal contraceptives, perform IVF,” the dragon’s breath is going to have far-reaching deadly effects on the manner in which ethical health care is delivered in America.
This latest Obama action resulted in Students for Life of America, among other groups, corresponding with the federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), which has now officially defended its decision to rescind conscience rights regarding abortion. As SFL reports in its press release,
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has officially responded to pro-life concerns over the recent conscience rescissions for medical students and medical professionals. The response comes after Students for Life of America, Medical Students for Life of America, Christian Medical Association, Catholic Medical Association, and the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists sent a letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sibelius expressing concerns over the Obama administration’s latest attempt to discriminate against medical professionals of faith and conscience.
The administration’s response said in part that “the provision of contraceptive services has never been defined as abortion in federal statute.” This is true because the government has always stood behind its false 1960’s definition of pregnancy, asserting that pregnancy begins at implantation, or eight days after the preborn child is actually in existence. So it should not come as a shock that the government would deny conscience protection to any health care provider that opposes abortion during the first week of life! The government has always ignored reality.
In point of fact, the new regulation was issued in February of this year and, as the Christian Post reported,
The Obama administration weighed whether to change the conscience protection rules or rescind it altogether. Though the HHS said the new rule maintains and builds upon provisions of the Bush administration rule, it limited the protections to just let workers refuse to perform abortion. …
“[The regulations] were never intended to allow providers to refuse to provide medical care to an individual because the individual engaged in behavior the health care provider found objectionable.”
So in response to this travesty one would have expected the Catholic bishops to express outrage, as did Students for Life and, most recently, Jill Stanek. But no! According to Catholic Culture,
Rather than condemning the new rules, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a measured response. Speaking for the bishops’ conference, Deirdre McQuade said … that the USCCB would work to expand the “conscience clause” protections.
Responses like this one make life impossible for strong pro-life organizations because, while we are working to right a wrong that is purely and simply an injustice to all those in health care who know the truth, the USCCB prefers to work behind the scene! This plays right into the hands of the Obama administration, singeing and then completely eradicating sound medical practices.
We agree with Stanek one hundred percent when she writes,
The FDA [Food and Drug Administration] is a branch of DHHS. The FDA admits hormonal contraceptives may kill conceived humans. But because killing conceived humans before they implant in the wall of their mother’s uterus is not defined as abortion, killing them is not considered killing them, so pro-life medical professionals have no right to opt out. They apparently exist in a 5-9 day long preborn state of the living dead.
But they’re not dead. The Obama administration is telling us to just shut up and kill them.
America as we know it cannot long exist with tactics that result in death and destruction based on false definitions and “dragonian” federal actions.
Make your voice heard. Let your elected officials know that health care professionals who understand accurate science should not be condemned to either kill or quit.
