Bishop Robert Vasa of the Diocese of Baker, Oregon hit the proverbial nail on the head when he recently wrote: “There is a point at which passive ‘tolerance’ allows misleading teachings to be spread and propagated, thus confusing or even misleading the faithful about the truths of the Church…There is a very strong word, which still exists in our Church, which most of us are too ‘gentle’ to use. The word is ‘heresy.’”
When I read this three things occured to me. The first was to pray a silent prayer of thanks to God for this amazing bishop who has exhibited courage in a way that is too little seen in the United States today. The second was to write him a word of thanks. The third was to tell you that all is not lost, for as in times past in the history of the Catholic Church, it only takes one bishop with deep faith and trust in God to help his peers see the truth of what he is preaching. May that be the case now, in the United States, with our bishops.
Thanks be to God for Bishop Robert Vasa. Please tell him you love and admire him and pray for him.You may write him at Box 5999, Bend, OR 97708. Phone: 541-388-4004. Fax: 541-388-2566.
