It should come as no surprise that the media will always go out of its way to find a pro-abortion Catholic to comment on Catholic moral teaching, including the encyclical Humanae Vitae. And perhaps this is because, according to some surveys, Catholic women are just as likely to abort a baby as non-Catholic women.
So, the question becomes simply, Why?
If we consider the opinion of Jon O’Brien, president of Catholics for Choice, we get a clue. This pro-abortion man has written that, since Catholics have not “received” Church teaching, it need not apply to them. Let me share his words:
The concept of reception means that a church law must be accepted by Catholic people in order for it to effectively guide the community. Many of the hierarchy’s teachings on reproductive issues have not been received by the faithful. Worldwide, Catholics have soundly rejected the church’s ban on contraception. In many countries only a minority of Catholics agree with church leaders on abortion.
But wait! Where does O’Brien talk about obedience to the laws of God? Where does he tell us that the truth taught by Christ and His Church are part of being a Catholic? Of course he never says that. He suggests that the hierarchy make this stuff up, or perhaps he means it is just their opinion. Either way, he is wrong.
The media will always go out of its way to find a pro-abortion Catholic to comment on Catholic moral teaching. Never a faithful Catholic.

Father John Trigilio shares the facts that O’Brien sneakily ignores:
Knowledge is when there is a correspondence between your mind and reality. You know 2+2=4 but we believe there is only one God who is also three Persons in that one Godhead. That is not knowledge, that is faith. We believe what God revealed because He revealed it. Faith does not contradict reason, it complements it. What we do not or cannot know by reason, we can believe by faith.
That’s where Mr. O’Brien goes awry. And, sadly, he is not the only one.
Think about other CINOs—Catholics in Name Only—who are out there deceiving and deluding the public every day. And think about how the bishops in so many cases remain silent. We see Catholic members of the House of Representatives, like Nancy Pelosi, James Moran and Ed Markey, and Senators Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, John Kerry, and Dick Durbin. This is by no means a complete list, but in the case of each of these, their support of abortion is beyond the pale.
Yet they are all Catholics who receive the body of Christ in the Eucharist, Catholics who have never been called to publicly repent for their support of an act that kills a preborn child.
No wonder Catholics gravitate toward favoring aborting children and contracepting their bodies in order to avoid pregnancy. The majority of Catholics who support or practice contraception probably do not even realize that their birth control method could act chemically to cause the death of a preborn child who may not be able to implant and who will die as a result.
In cases like this, ignorance is not bliss; it is deadly.
There is really only one way to resolve this. It is through the process of education, evangelization, and catechesis. Only when we engage Catholics in an honest discussion about who dies during an abortion and who may die if they use the pill will we make progress.
Teaching truth is not easy, and it sure would help if every bishop taught as Missouri bishop James V. Johnston, Jr. does that abortion, sterilization, and contraception are wrong.
Until then, we must be teachers. Catholics and abortion should not be a topic; Catholics ending abortion should.
Save the babies, teach the truth.
