It’s a quagmire out there!
There are so many thorny problems confronting the people of this nation that it amazes me when I think of where we could be. Yet mankind presses on. It takes a whole lot to break the human spirit. And thankfully, there is always a thirst to make things better, always the desire to fix what is broken.
The headlines are disturbing, to say the least. There are grand juries persecuting the righteous and exonerating the evildoers. In the case of David Daleiden versus the abortion giant, Planned Parenthood, and the recent Harris County, Texas, grand jury indictment, Lila Rose, founder of Live Action, said, “David Daleiden and his team have done a tremendous public service by exposing the horrific crimes against humanity that Planned Parenthood hides behind closed doors. CMP’s investigation forced Planned Parenthood, a tax-funded billion dollar corporation, to admit it was harvesting and selling aborted baby parts.” In addition, Kristan Hawkins, of Students for Life of America, stated, “It’s horrifying that the Houston grand jury failed to indict the organization who was willing to sell baby body parts yet somehow manages to indict the journalist who caught them in the act.”
There are children diagnosed with Down syndrome prior to birth who are more likely to be killed than to be born into a loving environment. “Unfortunately, society goes through peaks and troughs of sympathy towards the disabled—and we risk entering a darker age,” writes one reporter.
There are women who are paid as much as $8,000 for selling their eggs so that others who say they want to have children can do so. According to some, these women pay a heavy price for this “service.” Their stories “range from body horror tales that involve ‘overstimulated ovaries’ to anxious frets about the surreal experience of having a child you’ve never met, and a few feel-good yarns about a woman who met her donated egg baby and formed a special bond.”
These are but three examples that demonstrate the topsy-turvy world we live in today.
So what would the best course be to pursue the goal of turning hearts and minds away from today’s cultural disdain for truth and respect for the human person? How do we begin to teach others how to right these wrongs? How do we fill this void with love, light, and truth?
While there are probably numerous good suggestions for effecting wholesome change in attitudes, we do have a couple that are concrete and offer positive solutions now.
For the high school or college student who wants to learn more about defending life at every stage, Life Defenders presents a good place to start. From blog posts to videos to events like National Pro-Life T-Shirt Day, Life Defenders is on the move. Its mission is succinct and straightforward: “Build a society that embraces the culture of life by connecting with young adults through innovative educational resources, a strong online presence, the hosting of unique events, and the offering of support to young people. We work to educate and empower youth everywhere to love, respect, and stand up for all human beings so that together we can forge a better tomorrow.”
For parents, homeschooling educators, and teachers from preschool through high school, the Culture of Life Studies Program is one sure way to help educate future generations in ways that resonate with the messages contained in St. John Paul II’s Gospel of Life. Blog posts, social media posts on Facebook and elsewhere, and the vitally important hands-on unit studies and other resources make the CLSP crucial to teaching the young how to be instruments of healing the brokenness that results daily from cultural influences designed to denigrate human beings.
Cursing the darkness is not an option for pro-life Americans; it never has been.
We can change attitudes and help our fellow human beings see the beauty of truth when we use the language of love and exhibit the patience to persuade others. We can bring hope to those who are lost.
