Washington, DC (20 May 2010) – American Life League president Judie Brown expressed her appreciation to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for withdrawing from the Leadership Council on Civil and Human Rights – an organization that has long advocated abortion rights and same-sex marriage and was recently exposed supporting the nomination of pro-abortion Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan. She urged Catholic Charities to follow the USCCB’s example and withdraw immediately.
“Catholic social teaching places human personhood at the center of any work toward civil and human rights – for this reason, we are grateful that the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has seen fit to end all association with an organization diametrically opposed to Catholic teaching on abortion and the family.
“Elena Kagan is no friend to the human rights of those in the womb.
Michael Hichborn, American Life League’s lead researcher into the USCCB agreed:
“Since at least the early 1980’s the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights has worked against protecting marriage and the family, for three decades this arrangement between the LCCHR and the USCCB has been a source of scandal for Catholic faithful.
“Catholic ties to pro-abortion organizations must be severed and it is our hope that Catholic Charities will follow the lead of the Catholic bishops and withdraw immediately from the LCCHR.”
American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to death.
