Satisfaction is prevalent among those who have cheered the reelection of a man who promotes killing preborn children. Apparently this is what happens when well-meaning people put all their eggs in the political basket rather than striving to help every American see the result of abortion in human terms.
A recent headline made this point, stating that “abortion lies, not bans are killing women.” The writer explains that “it is a shame that women of reproductive age are being used as political pawns,” but the actual reality is even more deadly. Babies are at risk, and the emperor has no clothes. Allow me to explain.
Fickle posturing and lame explanations are never a good idea, but when a person’s life is at stake, they are deadly. Pro-life leader Kristan Hawkins recently commented regarding the election of Donald Trump, “We see a path for a strong agenda with the Trump administration, and I do see a path forward,” but “I don’t think the pro-life movement will get everything it wants with the Trump administration.”
Indeed. And many of us laboring in the American pro-life movement realized long ago that until the dangers of the birth control pill, the truth about the practice of in vitro fertilization, and the reality of the person who exists from her beginning are prioritized in pro-life political agenda, we will not only not get anything we want but will be fed breadcrumbs. And sadly, some among us will tell their followers and supporters that we are at a banquet!
But how can anyone think we are making significant advances when we are still quibbling about chemical abortion and never admitting the truth that the number of dead babies is increasing rather than decreasing?
Just think for a moment about this headline. The Hill published an article entitled “How the Morning-After Pill Has Been Pulled into Abortion Battles,” in which this statement is made: “Confusion over the mechanics of the morning-after pill has existed for years and only added to further confusion about its legality after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.”
Frankly there is no confusion, only deception involved in a media campaign that is focused on rejecting the science regarding when a human being’s life begins.
For example, the contraceptive company Cadence says levonorgestrel delays ovulation, but the medical definition of how levonorgestrel works tells the tale: “Levonorgestrel prevents pregnancy by interfering with ovulation, fertilization, and implantation. The levonorgestrel-only containing emergency contraceptive tablet is 89% effective if it is used according to prescribing information within 72 hours after intercourse.”
In other words, levonorgestrel can make it impossible for the embryonic person to continue her life by negatively affecting the wall of the uterus. This is where that little one has to implant if she is to continue growing. Simply, there is no difference between how the morning-after pill works and the poisoning of a toddler by putting deadly chemicals in her breakfast. Either way, a child dies.
So when we read a headline that suggests a slight decline in the number of babies who die from abortion, we need to take a step back and raise an objection. Statistics lie, especially when not all of those eliminated by the various kinds of abortion are not included in the data. To put it another way, people are not numbers, they are individuals who deserve our respect no matter how old they are or where they live.
As confirmed Catholics, we are blessed with the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of God. We are able to employ each of these gifts in our daily struggle to defend the babies. Let us ask the Lord for the ability to do so. Every day is a good day to begin stopping the betrayal of preborn children by speaking the truth loudly and often.
Remember, like Elijah, we hear the Lord whispering in our ears and we are called to be filled with zeal for truth and justice!
