Communique – Oct. 14, 2003

special edition

TERRI SCHIAVO: According to court records, a disabled Florida woman’s guardians will be allowed to disconnect her feeding tube at 2 pm Wednesday, Oct. 15. Terri Schiavo’s husband, Michael Schiavo, has insisted that it was her wish that she would not want to have her life prolonged if she were in such a situation. However, her parents dispute that, and have fought in court for years to keep their daughter alive. They say she is neither in a coma nor a persistent vegetative state. Terri’s parents are running out of time, but they are not running out of hope. Here are some of the suggestions that are being offered for people who wish to help.

PRAYER: As in all situations, the ultimate answer is in God’s hands. Please pray for Terri, her family, and anyone who could make a difference for her at this most critical moment. If her feeding tube is removed, Terri will slowly die of starvation.

FASTING: Others are suggesting that people fast in solidarity with Terri. Fasting, when coupled with prayer, is an especially strong spiritual weapon.

VIGIL: A number of Floridians are holding a vigil outside Hospice Woodside in Pinellas Park, where Terri Schiavo resides. Others are planning to gather outside the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee.

CONTACT JEB BUSH: Although Florida’s governor filed a friend-of-the-court brief in Terri’s behalf, some Floridians say Gov. Jeb Bush could take additional steps to protect her life. The phone number for the governor’s office is 850-488-4441.
