Communique – Jun. 9, 2000

chemical (medical) abortion

MISOPROSTOL AND CRAMPING PAIN: Patients using a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol to abort have complained of cramping pain during the three- to six-hour period following the use of misoprostol. Researchers studied 2,121 women with pregnancies of less than 63 days and determined that use of narcotic analgesia with patients who were further along or younger in age was preferred.

(Reading: “Predictors of Analgesia Use During Supervised Medical Abortion,” Contraception, 2000:61, pp. 225-229 – paid subscription only)

MORNING AFTER PILL (EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION) I: Researchers from Princeton University and Population Council have completed a meta-analysis of studies to determine the need for social science studies on delivery of emergency contraception services, and the design of such services for the future. The Kaiser Family Foundation funded the study.

(Reading: “Emergency Contraception: A Review of the Programmatic and Social Science Literature,” Contraception, 2000:61, pp. 145-186 – paid subscription only)

MORNING AFTER PILL (EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION) II: The Los Angeles-based Pacific Institute for Women’s Health recently published two guides on EC, one for consumers and one for health practitioners. The web site describes EC as “a woman’s right.”

MORNING AFTER PILL (EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION) III: The British Department of Health has issued a news release stating that the Committee on the Safety of Medicines has proposed reclassifying “levonorgestrel 0.75mg for emergency contraception from prescription only to pharmacy availability.” The proposal would allow pharmacists to provide the compound to women 16 years of age and older. A public consultation process is now underway in the United Kingdom.

(Reading: “Information at SPUC,” 5/22/00 [SPUC: “>Society for the Protection of Unborn Children]. The document issued by the Department of Health (Reclassification of Levonorgestrel 0.75mg) is available along with the proposal text)

condoms

BREAKAGE AND SLIPPAGE: Researchers compared tactylon and latex condoms used by 443 couples enrolled in a study to determine whether tactylon condoms were better or worse than latex. Both partners had to be 18-45 years of age and involved in a monogamous relationship to participate in the study. There was no appreciable difference in breakage or slippage, but acceptability was higher when the tactylon condom was used.

(Reading: “Comparative Evaluation of Three Tactylon Condoms and a Latex Condom During Vaginal Intercourse: Breakage and Slippage,” Contraception, 2000:61, pp. 205-215 – paid subscription only)

contraception advocacy

A WEB REPORT: Contraception Report, a publication funded by Wyeth-Ayerst and edited by David Grimes, M.D. of Princeton, provides readers with a concise outline of the locations on the internet where one can acquire “reliable information on contraception and reproductive health.” For details on these sites, please contact American Life League for a hard copy of the two-page report: “Contraception information on the Internet.” The same issue includes a full report on how the web can advance “education” on contraception. Contraception Report, cooperatively created with the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Reproductive Health is not on the web.

(Reading: “The Contraception Report Patient Update 1,” insert, 5/00)

naturally spacing children

CREIGHTON MODEL FERTILITY CARE SYSTEM (CrMS): Researchers studied the continuation of instruction among women in various locations. There were 1,458 women in all, four different locations, and various intentions among the women studied including the achievement of pregnancy as a goal and the avoidance of pregnancy as a goal. Researchers found that “those who begin and continue instruction in the CrMS are more likely to be educated, of higher income, Catholic and white.”

(Reading: “Characteristics of Women Associated with Continuing Instruction in the Creighton Model Fertility Care System,” Contraception, 2000:61, pp. 121-129 – paid subscription only)

parents

NATIONAL PARENTS COMMISSION: Peg Luksik and Robin Bernhoft host the “Welcome Home USA” radio program and are currently working on a taped program that will provide parents and others with the tools to “unveil the cultural, social and spiritual issues that attack the culture of love and life.” For details on these programs, and a copy of the current issue of the National Parents Commission news, visit this site.

pregnancy

MATERNAL MALIGNANT BRAIN TUMOR: Researchers studied eight women who were diagnosed with malignant brain tumors during pregnancy. “Six were emergently delivered of their infants because of maternal deterioration, and two were delivered electively in the early third trimester after documentation of fetal pulmonary maturity. There were four maternal deaths and one neonatal death; all of the other infants maintained viability.”

(Reading: “Obstetric Emergencies Precipitated by Malignant Brain Tumors,” American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 5/00, pp. 1215-1221)

reproductive health

ADOLESCENTS: Planned Parenthood is promoting the use of funding provided by Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for “family planning services” for adolescents. They are touting statistics provided by the equally pro-abortion, pro-promiscuity for youth Children’s Defense Fund.

(Reading: Planned Parenthood fact sheet, “Potential adolescent reproductive health coverage in the CHIP.” Also see May 4, 2000 National ProLife Alert exposing Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Children’s Defense Fund and the CDF agenda. For a copy, contact pro-life author “>Randy Engel)

sexually transmitted diseases

RISKY BEHAVIOR I: An analysis of the sociological requirements necessary to curtail risky sexual behavior suggested social barriers to protecting against such behavior includes “inaccurate risk perception.” Referring to “downhill phenomenon,” the researchers comment that “people always compare their own risk with someone who is at much greater risk than themselves. This leads to an assessment of oneself as being at substantially lower risk than dispassionate evidence would suggest.”

(Reading: “Preventing HIV: Determinants of Sexual Behavior,” The Lancet, 5/27/00, pp. 1897-1901)

RISKY BEHAVIOR II: Amidst reports of increasing gonorrhea rates, Swansea (United Kingdom) physicians write “we feel safer-sex messages are currently being unheeded in our area resulting in alarming increases in gonococcal (and chlamydial) infection which dwarf the rises reported in London.”

(Reading: “Increasing Gonorrhea Reports – Not Only in London,” The Lancet, 5/27/00, pp. 1907)

stem cell research

SEARCH ENGINE USEFUL: Please note that a wide collection of materials on stem cell research is easily located by using the search engine Savvy Search and searching the term “stem cell research.”

vaccines

ABORTED BABIES AS RESOURCE FOR CHILDHOOD VACCINE: Terri Cook has done independent research into the vaccines that are available because tissue and cells from aborted babies were used versus alternative vaccines. She also points out that pediatricians are hesitant to provide alternatives but will when asked. For example, her pediatrician provided single doses of measles and mumps vaccines. “He said they are available to any pediatrician, but that some practices may choose only to do the MMR and may not be honest with their patients.” Cook is happy to provide a copy of her independent research findings to anyone who “>e-mails a request.

reflection for prayer

Finally, grow strong in the Lord, with the strength of his power. Put on the full armor of God so as to be able to resist the devil’s tactics. For it is not against human enemies that we have to struggle, but against the principalities and the ruling forces who are masters of the darkness in this world, the spirits of evil in the heavens. That is why you must take up all God’s armor, or you will not be able to put up any resistance on the evil day, or stand your ground even though you exert yourselves to the full.
