abortion

BREAST CANCER I: Dr. Richard Klausner, director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), recently responded to a letter from Congressman Tom Bliley (R-Va.) which asked specific questions about the current NCI position that abortion and breast cancer are not linked. The letter contains many false and/or misleading statements. Joel Brind, Ph.D, has analyzed the letter in the current issue of Abortion-Breast Cancer Quarterly Update. For a copy write “>Joel Brind, Ph.D., P.O. Box 3127, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. The newsletter subscription rate is $45 per year. Subscriptions may be obtained online..

BREAST CANCER II: French researchers, including Alexandre Lapillonne of the Curie Institute, write in a letter to The Lancet: “Women who have had a pregnancy interruption might be at increased risk of breast cancer, compared with women who have delivered at term, because they never attain the protective effect of mammary-gland differentiation.” They go on to suggest that more study is required because of conflicting outcomes in previous studies.

(Reading: “Duration of pregnancy and risk of Breast Cancer,” The Lancet, 6/12/99, p. 2075; “>Alexandre Lapillonne.)

EXCEPTIONS: Arguing in favor of not only life, but health of the mother exceptions, the Alan Guttmacher Report suggests that an effort to exclude mental health from the broad definition of health exceptions conflicts with current constitutional law. And the writer adds, “The mental health exception is also critical because it has been the aegis under which most abortions in cases of severe fetal abnormality have been justified.”

(Reading: “Abortion restrictions and the drive for Mental Health Parity: A Conflict In Values?” Alan Guttmacher Report on Public Policy, 6/99, pp. 4-6)

SUCTION CURRETAGE OR RU-486: A study compared 178 cases of mifepristone (RU-486)/misoprostol abortions with 199 suction curretage abortions in women 18 years of age or older. The “medical abortion” failure rate was 18.3% which is “more than twice the 2% to 8% rate reported using similar combinations of drugs in Europe.” Researchers found that medical abortion patients had more discomfort, though they claim that “endometriosis is associated with surgical instrumentation of the uterus and with retained products of conception.”

KILLS: In the Alan Guttmacher Report, Susan Cohen writes that oral contraceptives “may prevent pregnancy either by preventing fertilization or by preventing implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus.” And she writes that other methods which “may act to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg” include “hormonal contraceptive methods and the IUD.”

COMMENT: In other words, Cohen does not recognize a human being at fertilization; such intentional blindness to scientific fact may give comfort to the pro-death forces but does not alter the fact that a human being is destroyed by such chemicals and devices.

TRANSDERMAL PATCH: Levotech Inc. has enrolled 87 women for the phase II/III clinical trials testing the “efficacy of a seven-day contraceptive transdermal patch.” Each participant will have her hormone and drug levels measured, and “all subjects will receive ultrasound evaluation of follicular size and endometrial thickness.”

SCHOOL NURSE: The National Association of School Nurses is recommending that students in fourth grade be taught about puberty and menstruation. The plan adopted by the association provides for parents to make the decision to exclude their children from the fourth grade class. Association board member Nancy Gadsden said early education about puberty can help reassure girls who may be harassed if they develop earlier than their peers.

PRO DEATH POSITION: Harold Varmus, M.D., in his January 26 statement before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, said, “Totipotent stem cells – such as the product of fertilization of an ovum and its progeny – are stem cells that have total potency, which means that they have the ability to form an entire mature organism, e.g. a human being, although only if placed in a woman’s uterus.”

COMMENT: Varmus dehumanizes the embryonic baby. He alleges that he or she is not human unless he resides “in a woman’s uterus.” This is nothing less than scientific fraud-the resurrection of the fallacious “pre-embryo” without the actual term being used.

(Reading: Statement of Harold Varmus, M.D., director, National Institutes of Health, 1/26/99)

PRO LIFE POSITION: Minnesota Physicians for Life issued a public statement on the ghoulish practice of destroying embryonic babies so their stem cells can be used in research. In part it says: “There is no question that, from the biological standpoint, the formation and development of the human embryo appears as a continuous, coordinated and gradual process from the time of fertilization. The conceptus is not a mere possibility of human life; it is human life. Changing designations to, say, ‘pre-embryo’ does not change this fact.”

Failures include observed pregnancies because women were already pregnant when they used the regimen or became pregnant after treatment.

TREATMENT FAILURES: An analysis of eight studies and a combined treatment of the same studies involving use of the Yuzpe regimen of “emergency contraception” indicates that the true effectiveness rate is 74.1%. Failures include observed pregnancies because women were already pregnant when they used the regimen or became pregnant after treatment.

CONCEPTUS: In an analysis of the timing of implantation as it relates to loss of pregnancy, researchers point out that “a conceptus must successfully attach itself to maternal tissue in order to survive.” And in the abstract, “Implantation of the conceptus is a key step in pregnancy…”

COMMENT: Clearly pregnancy begins at fertilization, and implantation is but one in the many steps a human being takes on his walk through life.

BIRTH CONTROL IN TOP TEN: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention‘s list of the century’s ten great public health achievements includes “family planning” because it has “changed women’s social and economic roles and has provided health benefits for both women and children.”

COMMENT: That is unless you count all those who have died from chemical and surgical abortion.

sex education

SCHOOL NURSE: The National Association of School Nurses is recommending that students in fourth grade be taught about puberty and menstruation. The plan adopted by the association provides for parents to make the decision to exclude their children from the fourth grade class. Association board member Nancy Gadsden said early education about puberty can help reassure girls who may be harassed if they develop earlier than their peers.

stem cell research

ETHICAL HOPE: Japanese clinicians report that the transplantation of corneal epithelial stem cells can restore useful vision in some patients for whom standard corneal transplantation is not an option. The stem cells used in this research were obtained from cadavers.
