birth control pill
KILLS: The current issue of Child & Family presents a scholarly treatment of the Pill’s various modes of action, including abortion. Regarding so-called emergency contraception: “Many women are unaware of the ability of progestagens to induce early abortions. The ‘morning after’ pill, which consists of two double doses of the pill 12 hours apart (often inducing nausea and vomiting, the two double [doses] being of toxic proportions) acts by inducing a withdrawal bleed. In other words, the endometrium is shed, as in menstruation, leaving the embryo nowhere to implant if conception occurs. ‘Post-coital contraception’ as this is called is thus not contraception at all but a process for initiating very early abortion.”

UNBORN VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE ACT OF 1999: H.R. 2436, available for reading at http://thomas.loc.gov, is best explained by the following example. If an expectant mother is about to enter an abortion mill, but is shot by a stray bullet from a bank robber across the street and her unborn child is killed, that child would be a victim under this new law. If the mother proceeded through the door of the abortion mill and paid to have her baby killed by abortion, there would be no victim according to the law.

STEM CELL RESEARCH: Is the human embryo a person?
STEM CELL RESEARCH: Is the human embryo a person?
STEM CELL RESEARCH: Is the human embryo a person?
The embryo is already a human being with dignity and all the rights inherent to a human being.
The human embryo’s life, and therefore his personhood, his membership in the human family begins at fertilization.
Those like Dr. Harold Varmus, Director of the National Institutes of Health, have attempted repeatedly to rob the human embryo of his identity as part of the community of human beings, the family of persons we know as our species. And yet, scientific evidence is clear and Dr. Varmus is therefore totally incorrect in his arguments.
For example, in analyzing the Varmus’s January 26, 1999, statement to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, Professor Dianne Irving notes the following:
“Scientifically, 100 percent of human embryologists internationally agree that human beings begin at fertilization (or cloning):
- At fertilization (or cloning) there is present an already existing, genetically unique individual, live human being or organism capable of carrying out all life functions-regardless if it is implanted or not.
- The whole embryonic blastocyst is the human being, not just the inner cell mass, from which stem cells are obtained for research.
- Human embryology demonstrates scientifically that an early human embryo is NOT a “pre-embryo,” NOT a “potential human being,” NOT just a “bunch of cells with the potency to form an entire mature organism – e.g. a human being”…although only if placed in a woman’s uterus.
Such false, misleading and dehumanizing words such as “pre-embryo,” “potential human being,” et cetera, represent nothing less than scientific fraud.

NORTHERN IRELAND: With the news that a transplant coordinator agreed with a white donor’s demand that their kidney not go to a black person, many Northern Ireland people are refusing to donate their organs at all. The fear is that religious conditions could be put on organs whereby a Catholic organ would not be given to a Protestant.

UNITED KINGDOM: The British Medical Association has backed a call to use dead people’s organs for transplants without having to seek permission first. The process is called “presumed consent” and means that only those who have specifically stated that they do not want to be organ donors would be excluded from the practice.

CANADA/U.S. STONEWALL: Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute reported that Canadian pro-abortion groups ran a series of meetings on UNFPA population programs and excluded pro-life participation. In protest, Mark Pickup, a Canadian activist, has written to Hon. Lloyd Axworthy, Minister of Foreign Affairs for Canada, and asked for an explanation. Americans are invited to do likewise. Axworthy’s address is House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6. In addition, since NARAL, National Abortion Federation and the U.S. Committee for UNFPA were also active in this one-sided debacle, similar letters, requesting a full accounting, should be sent to “>President William Jefferson Clinton, White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. 20500.

IRAN: U. N. officials have warned Iran that because 52% of the population is below the age of 20, there is a likelihood that the population growth rate could be alarming. The U.N.’s UNFPA recommends birth control, “contraceptive surgeries,” and vasectomies for men. Iran also has a law limiting state child support to three children per family.

DAVID SATCHER SPEAKS: The U.S. Surgeon General says that church pastors have been silent about sexual matters, and told interviewers after his speech at the National Black Religious Summit on Sexuality that young people should be taught that sex is for a “committed relationship.” He said he avoids using the word “marriage” to keep his message “culturally broad.”

ACTION: Oppose human embryo research. Actively work to protect the tiniest of our brothers and sisters. Sign the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity statement opposing destructive stem cell research today! Visit the site and give your support.
reflection for prayer
Lord, free me from evil passions and heal my heart of all disorderly affections, that being healed and well purified in my interior, I may become fit to love, courageous to suffer and constant to persevere. Amen.
