abortion

ACCESS: The American Medical Women’s Association has adopted positions in favor of nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives and physician assistants being trained as abortion providers, in support of more effective chemical methods of family planning and abortion, and against restrictions on reproductive health services and benefits by faith-based hospitals and their affiliates. In addition, they are working with Planned Parenthood to “heighten awareness about the availability and efficacy” of emergency contraceptives, more accurately described as emergency abortion pills.

KANSAS: Two state legislators have vowed to introduce new legislation in the 2000 session that will provide for the performance of so-called partial-birth abortions only when “necessary to save the life of a mother because her life is endangered by physical disorder, physical illness or physical injury.”

COMMENT: And they call this a ban?

SECOND-TRIMESTER UTERINE EVACUATION: Researchers compare the use of intravaginal misoprostol with intra-amniotic (15S)-15-methyl-prostaglandin F2a for inducing second-trimester abortions. Remarking that no one method is clearly superior to all others during second-trimester abortion, they list among current methods dilation and evacuation, hysterotomy, intravenous infusion of oxytocin and others.

IMPLANON: A three-year “contraceptive” implant designed to rival the pill in popularity, Implanon will be available in Australia by the end of the year. Researcher, author and pharmacist John Wilks, B.Pharm, MPS, points out that the side effects include irregular and unpredictable bleeding, slight weight gain, headache, acne, breast pain and endometrial thinning (leading to early abortion).

MECHANISM OF ACTION: An analysis of studies involving the mode of action of hormonal contraceptives and IUDs admits that in each case there are “multiple biologic effects” including “effects on the endometrium.” Researchers point out that such effects “could affect implantation” but state that “no scientific evidence indicates that prevention of implantation actually results from the use of these methods,” though they admit to breakthrough ovulation actually occurring. The researchers pose the following false scientific definition: “once pregnancy begins, none of these methods has an abortifacient action.”

COMMENT: In other words, the false view that pregnancy does not begin until implantation implies lack of honesty in the balance of the study.

PERSONHOOD A BAD WORD! In Boston a 14-year-old expectant mother, Chauntae Renee Jones, was found murdered. The accused killer is being charged with double murder because Chauntae’s seven-month-old baby was also killed. Spokesmen for the National Abortion Rights Action League have expressed concern because “establishing personhood for a fetus may ultimately undermine abortion rights.”

DONATIONS TO LESBIANS? Researchers examine a programmed approach to assisted reproduction that would “[meet] the needs of single and lesbian women as well as older and less affluent couples.” They recommend the donation of “extra embryos” by couples who have generated a surplus in their quest to bear a child.
