METHOTREXATE INJECTION vs. ORAL ADMINISTRATION: Ellen Wiebe, M.D., studied 100 women seeking abortions, comparing 50 who were administered misoprostol and oral MTX versus 50 who were administered misoprostol and MTX injections. She concludes that efficacy is equal between the two modes of administering methotrexate. These abortions, often referred to as medical abortions, are done up to seven weeks gestational age and each woman must agree that if the medical abortion fails, she will submit to a surgical procedure.

TRANSDERMAL (SKIN) PATCH: Commenting on Evra, the newest Johnson and Johnson proposed “contraceptive patch” (see communique 8/13/99) Robert Sassone observes, and John Wilks, B. Pharm, MPS concurs: “Fentanyl is a pain reliever that is routinely given via transdermal patch. Your latest email (8/13/99 communique) indicates that transdermal contraceptives will be important. Fentanyl has killed a few people because their skin temperature increased via heating pads or even more apparently innocuous means. Any contraceptive given via transdermal will fluctuate in flow volume as a function of the temperature of the skin to which the patch is coupled. For example, if one is sore and uses a heating pad, the increased flow could be substantial.”

ELDERLY STAND ASIDE? Italian researchers asked elderly residents of Padova, Italy who could be potentially awaiting cardiac surgery whether they would surrender their place in line so that a younger or a self-employed individual might receive treatment first. 443 elderly potential patients responded. Fifty-one percent said they would cede their place for cardiac surgery while 68 percent said they would cede their place for an outpatient examination, whether the other person was younger or self-employed. Though this study was exploratory and no conclusions could be drawn, the authors point out that “even if many of today’s elderly people believe that their health needs should be secondary to those of younger persons, our findings suggest that tomorrow’s elderly-the large generation of graying ‘baby boomers’-will be intolerant of age discrimination and assertive about their continuing rights to health care.”

imposed death

FLORIDA: Shirley Egan was charged with attempted murder in the shooting of her daughter, Georgette Smith (see communique, 6/8/99). Smith was paralyzed from the neck down as a result of the gunshot wound and later requested death by removal from a respirator. Her request was granted and Smith died. Egan was acquitted. The jury decided that Egan did not try to kill her daughter.

NEW YORK: A severely disabled man who had lived for 32 years on a ventilator asked that the apparatus be removed. The hospital concurred, and he died Friday, 8/13/99. Bill White was thought to be the nation’s longest surviving quadriplegic. His decision and the hospital’s agreement in that decision will not precipitate any legal action. New York law allows patients to opt out of “lifesaving treatment.” Mr. White was not dying.

REGRETS? A multicenter cohort study of 11,232 women has indicated that though women may not regret being sterilized immediately after the fact, the findings “suggest that a surprisingly high percentage of women 30 or younger undergoing sterilization will later regret their decision. Despite no evidence of any association, older women may ascribe later gynecologic problems to the procedure. Both observations stress the need for careful counseling before sterilization.”

reflection for prayer

You live in an age when you must show your desires by your works. Look around you: where is the divine majesty honored, where is his tremendous greatness venerated, where is his most holy will obeyed? See the misery into which souls are plunged.

What need there is to prepare yourselves for all manner of work and struggle to make of yourselves efficient instruments of divine grace for such a work! Especially when there are so few loyal workers ‘who do not seek their own advantage, but that of Jesus Christ” (Philippians, 2:21).

ELDERLY STAND ASIDE? Italian researchers asked elderly residents of Padova, Italy who could be potentially awaiting cardiac surgery whether they would surrender their place in line so that a younger or a self-employed individual might receive treatment first. 443 elderly potential patients responded.

UNFPA STRONG ARM TACTICS CONFIRMED: Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute has reported diligently on the pro-death, anti-family activities carried on through the UNFPA. Canadian House of Commons member Jason Kenney recently confirmed those reports in a letter, “The UNFPA and the IPPF run a very sophisticated bait-and-switch operation where they manage to either intimidate or co-opt delegates from various third world delegations.”

sterilization

-Ignatius of Loyola, 1538 AD
