See Dignity in Every Person

By Judie Brown

See Dignity is a campaign started in September by American Life League’s Life Defenders. The purpose of the campaign is to remind each of us that through our small acts of kindness toward others we are affirming human dignity and acting in solidarity with our brothers and sisters—both born and preborn.

Declaring human dignity by our actions and words is the foundation not only of the campaign but of everything that we pro-life people do in every aspect of our lives, day in and day out.

So what is dignity? The dignity of the human person is “rooted in his creation in the image and likeness of God.” If human dignity is not respected and protected, there can be no justice. Therefore we strive to remind others that to See Dignity is to love life as a gift from God—a gift to be cherished and revered at every level of society.

Here are some examples of how this validation of human dignity plays out in the lives of special persons and their families, teachers, and others.

One mom, in an effort to make her special child’s life more comfortable when she took her shopping, invented a revolutionary seat for shopping carts: “Drew Ann Long created a shopping cart company that specializes in a unique type of cart designed for children and adults with disabilities. Long started this journey when she found herself struggling in the grocery store to push her wheelchair-bound daughter while also pushing a shopping cart. Caroline’s Cart can be now seen in some major retailers such as Food Lion, Giant, Target, and Walmart.”

In Louisville, Kentucky, the Cook family welcomed newborn baby boy Matthew into the world last February. Matthew suffers from a rare form of dwarfism, and unlike his two older brothers, he is “extra small.” Matthew’s mother told local media that he “will be just like everybody else, he’ll be [out] there throwing the ball like a regular kid. He’s just extra small; there is nothing wrong with just being different.”

In Boston there is a 26-year-old woman with Down syndrome who has started her own cookie baking business! While she jokes that these days she never sleeps, the truth is that the very fact that Collette Divitto survived the womb is a miracle in itself. Thank goodness her parents chose life.

Emily Brown, director of American Life League’s Life Defenders, majored in education in college. She had the opportunity to teach special needs children, and writes:

Believe it or not, I learned more from my students than I did in all of my education classes combined. I learned firsthand that someone’s disability does NOT limit or define him.

I witnessed my students do amazing things, despite their disabilities. For instance, I saw a 10-year-old with Autism recite dates like a computer. You could give him any day, month, and year and he could tell you which day of the week it was within about 10 seconds. In addition, I watched a 5-year-old with Down syndrome do poses and stretches that were absolutely incredible. I taught a 7-year-old with intellectual disabilities who had so much compassion for others he could look at someone’s face and know if that person needed a hug.

Yes, respecting the lives of each of our fellow human beings—born and preborn—begins with our understanding that no human being is disposable; no human being is less valuable than another; and no human being deserves to die by cruel acts of abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, or other tools in the culture of death’s basket of despicable acts.

So join us, won’t you? SEE DIGNITY in each and every person!
