It was heartening for us to read the most recent statements coming from the Vatican, focused on the great gift God has given Catholic people in the reality of who is present in the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist.
Cardinal Julian Herranz, president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, said "Humanity has no right before God to receive the Eucharist, precisely because this is an act of infinite generosity and mercy." He further clarified that while the reception of Holy Eucharist can be viewed as a fundamental right, it is not an "absolute one. There are, in fact personal requirements limiting that right. … There are cases where … outward conduct is seriously, clearly and steadfastly contrary to the moral norm, and impedes access to Eucharistic Communion."
Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, reiterated this basic truth when he told the Synod of Bishops, "Politicians and legislators must know that, by proposing or defending projects for iniquitous laws, they have a serious responsibility for, and must find a remedy for the evil done and spread, in order to be allowed access to communion with the Lord."
Thank God for such concise leadership on the part of some members of the Church hierarchy,
