Planned Parenthood shows its violent side

Commentary by Jim Sedlak, executive director of American Life League's STOPP International

There is a continuous theme running through the Planned Parenthood Federation of America web site, a recurring message that equates "pro-life" with violence. It's just one of the many ways PPFA goes to great lengths to paint the pro-life community as one that tries to inflict its opinion through the means of violence.

In fact, its primary web site even has a section called "Terrorists and Extremist Organizations," which lists 15 groups. Both American Life League and its STOPP International project are listed on the site, despite the fact that we have specific statements against violence on our own web site. That doesn't seem to matter to Planned Parenthood. They want the world to see Planned Parenthood as the good guys, and the people who truly care about life as the extremist fanatics.

Thus, it was with some surprise that, on Saturday, August 6, I received an e-mail notification about a new animated short on the web site of Planned Parenthood Golden Gate in San Francisco. I immediately went to the site and was shocked by what I found.

Planned Parenthood had posted an animated short that depicts their "Superhero for Choice." This Planned Parenthood "Superhero" is a characterization of Dian Harrison, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Golden Gate.

The short depicts an abstinence educator as a sleazy character that Dian (called "Dianysis" when in her Superhero mode) drowns in a garbage can full of liquid – Dianysis actually holds down the lid while the educator dies. In the next scene, the short depicts peaceful pro-life demonstrators as zombies proclaiming Christian slogans in front of a Planned Parenthood facility. Dianysis, while admitting that everything the demonstrators are doing is peaceful and legal, shoots them all with a "condom" gun that wraps each demonstrator in a full-body condom which then explodes – killing the demonstrators.

The short then depicts members of Congress who disagree with Planned Parenthood as narcissists possessing the "stench of misinformed conservatism." Dianysis immerses a member of Congress into a boiling pot and he emerges naked and espousing Planned Parenthood's philosophies. As he runs off, the headline proclaims: "Planned Parenthood Wins Again!!!"

Finally, during the closing credits, a pro-life demonstrator is decapitated by a flying condom.

The entire animated short is simply a promotion of violence against those who disagree with Planned Parenthood's philosophies. Has Planned Parenthood become so frustrated that it is losing its ideological battle that it has determined its only recourse is to turn to violence?

Certainly, there is much reason for Planned Parenthood to be frustrated. Across the country young people are being taught chastity and abstinence, and Planned Parenthood's sexuality education programs are being tossed aside. The result is that, for the first time in decades, teen pregnancy is on the decline.

Thirty-two years after the Roe v. Wade decision was handed down by the Supreme Court, abortion is the most important consideration in the selection of the next Supreme Court justice. In the last election campaign, abortion played a major role in determining how people voted – and the presidential candidate Planned Parenthood endorsed lost.

Add to that the fact that Planned Parenthood has been closing down clinics for lack of support (well over 100 clinics have been closed since 1995) and several states have stopped giving money to Planned Parenthood, and you can see how employees of the organization are frustrated.

Almost two years ago, Gloria Feldt, then president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, compared pro-lifers to the little bugs that bite you at picnics. She said she wanted to get rid of them, but they just won't go away. Now, it seems, Dian has decided that the only way to end opposition to her organization's programs is to do violence to all that oppose them.

In this post-9/11 era of terrorism, Planned Parenthood has recklessly crossed the line by promoting violence against people who do not share the organization's radical beliefs. Planned Parenthood's actions are reprehensible, because there is no guarantee that someone viewing this video might not act on its suggestions and instigate violence against people of faith.

This appalling animation, posted on an official Planned Parenthood web site, demonstrates the organization's complete disrespect for human life.

If this outright promotion of violence is upsetting to you, there is one more fact that you should know – you paid for it! Nationally, Planned Parenthood receives almost 32 percent of its income from the American taxpayer. But Planned Parenthood Golden Gate receives over 50 percent of its income from us. Last year, you and I gave PPGG over $9 million dollars!

Now that Planned Parenthood has publicly revealed a violent streak that has obviously been going on in its backrooms for quite some time, it is time we put an end to the organization's influence. Let's cut off all taxpayer money going to Planned Parenthood. In addition, let's make sure this organization that promotes violence is not allowed anywhere near our children. It seems like the least we should do.
