As a mother and a grandmother it grieves me to say this, but like many other pro-life moms I know that, for some mothers, this Sunday may be an extremely difficult day.
Why? Well, the simple answer is that far too many moms have chosen to become the mother of a dead child rather than a living, breathing baby.
In other words, these mothers have chosen to abort their children.
And what is even more frustrating to some of us is that the pro-life political effort enables many of these abortions to continue under the guise of “banning abortions on babies with beating hearts,” to quote one headline.
This news report tells the story of the recent Iowa bill that was signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds. Reynolds claims that she is 100 percent pro-life, but the new law that bears her signature is not. This law permits abortion in cases of “medical emergency, rape, incest or fetal abnormalities deemed to be ‘incompatible’ with life.”
So calling the law a ban is deceptive and one can only hope that those who have done so have not read the actual words contained in Senate Bill 359.
Regardless, the law will permit abortion and that is crux of our concern because expectant mothers deserve better than an avenue that enables them to kill their children.
Not everyone agrees, of course, including Planned Parenthood. Last year around this time it was PP that shared an article with its followers entitled “This Mother’s Day, Moms Share Their Abortion Stories.” In addition, then-president Cecile Richards tweeted: “Nothing says ‘I love you, Mom!’ like standing up for the right of mothers everywhere to get the care they need.”
The obvious disdain that Planned Parenthood and its allies have toward motherhood is disturbing. They abhor the very idea that a preborn child might survive and be born. Such contempt results in stories like the recent report that a Planned Parenthood botched abortion resulted in the child’s mother delivering her dead baby in her own bathroom.
These facts should give any pro-life person a reason to pause, especially those involved in writing and supporting laws. There should never be a law described as pro-life that enables the grisly practice of aborting children to continue for any reason.
This is why the Iowa heartbeat law is so alarming. Playing into the hands of the death peddlers cannot be perceived as good for motherhood or for preborn children. Period.
It is time for all of us, no matter what we are doing in the pro-life movement, to consider the fact that being 100 percent pro-life in word and deed—including politics—is the only way to end this grisly practice that St. John Paul II so accurately called murder. As he taught:
The moral gravity of procured abortion is apparent in all its truth if we recognize that we are dealing with murder and, in particular, when we consider the specific elements involved. The one eliminated is a human being at the very beginning of life. No one more absolutely innocent could be imagined. In no way could this human being ever be considered an aggressor, much less an unjust aggressor! He or she is weak, defenseless, even to the point of lacking that minimal form of defense consisting in the poignant power of a newborn baby’s cries and tears. The unborn child is totally entrusted to the protection and care of the woman carrying him or her in the womb. And yet sometimes it is precisely the mother herself who makes the decision and asks for the child to be eliminated, and who then goes about having it done.
Let this Mother’s Day be a day when we not only celebrate our mothers, our grandmothers, and all mothers, but let it also be the day we resolve to end the politics of killing and resolve to be 100 percent pro-life in both word and deed.
