Abortion from the Abysmal Depths

By Judie Brown

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once asked a rhetorical question with a not so far-fetched answer. He wrote, “Why are those who are notoriously undisciplined and unmoral also most contemptuous of religion and morality? They are trying to solace their own unhappy lives by pulling the happy down to their own abysmal depths.”

If that sounds like a question and answer exam about the culture of death, then you know where I am going with these comments.

Every day holds another tragic example of the twisted thinking of those who claim that somehow the act of abortion is a good thing. The following examples illustrate my point.

Did you know that in Great Britain

“British government officials are considering a new program to encourage women to consider giving birth to babies diagnosed with fatal illnesses, rather than have an abortion, so that the babies’ organs can be harvested after they die?” According to the British newspaper, The Sunday Times, “Under the proposals, pregnant women discovered to be carrying such babies would be supported through the remainder of their pregnancy, allowing the child’s organs to develop fully. They would give birth as normal and key organs would be removed from the baby once it had been certified dead.”

This is of course a misrepresentation of the manner in which many organs are harvested. A pronouncement of death has to be made simultaneously with the harvesting of the organs needed. Otherwise there is a chance the organs would somehow be rendered useless. In other words, human beings whose lives had been deemed unworthy would become human organ farms.

To be clear, this proposal is not a law in Great Britain—at least not yet. But the very fact that such a thing would be proposed should give us pause and force us to contemplate the rapid descent of human decency in our world.

And it’s not only in Britain where we see this depravity! In the state of Indiana a bill has passed both houses of the legislature that would make it illegal to abort children diagnosed with Down syndrome “or other significant disabilities.” Believe it or not, the pro-aborts are outraged. LifeNews.com reports, “Pro-abortion websites bashed the bill as ‘outrageous’ and ‘extreme’ in its scope. Think Progress went so far as to claim that pro-lifers are trying to ‘drive an offensive wedge’ between pro-abortion groups and the disability rights community.”

Say what? Apparently those who favor abortion are so dedicated to child killing that they cannot accept any restriction on their blood-thirsty appetites if it means that any baby will be protected.

As atheist Richard Dawkins once opined when asked how he would answer a woman who was curious about what she should do if she found out she was carrying a child affected with Down syndrome,

Obviously the choice would be yours. For what it’s worth, my own choice would be to abort the Down fetus and, assuming you want a baby at all, try again. Given a free choice of having an early abortion or deliberately bringing a Down child into the world, I think the moral and sensible choice would be to abort. And, indeed, that is what the great majority of women, in America and especially in Europe, actually do.

And that, my friends, exemplifies the attitude of those who believe that God could not possibly know what He is doing. In addition, they feel that man is and should be free to take the lives of the vulnerable unfettered by moral constraints.

These examples of anti-life attitudes and actions are not isolated, but rather represent the kind of brash disregard for human dignity that grows more prevalent with the passing of each day.

This is why we must persist in our quest to end this madness, to remain happy in the Lord as we build a culture of life, and to never forget that the enemy is always lurking, trying to pull men and women down into the abysmal depths fostered by the culture of death.

Shine your light! Help us build a culture of life!
