Sometimes the simple facts of life become confused with the politically correct version of science or the misguided views of those who really don’t believe that anyone is a person prior to birth—or maybe even a week or two after that.
Oh yes! This is a terrifying problem. All of this confusion leaves the preborn child at the mercy of others and their lapse in common sense and reason.
Take, for example, the case of Hollywood actress Sophia Vergara and her “frozen embryos.” First of all, we must be clear about one main thing: Those frozen embryos are human beings who have been cryopreserved and are suspended in time, but not dead. That is what it means to freeze an embryonic human being.
Vergara, whose embryonic children are the result of an in vitro fertilization procedure, does not want her babies, though her former fiancé does. Furthermore, pro-life groups realize that her embryos are people, so she is being sued by her embryonic children. While some have suggested that this suit is nothing more than a publicity stunt, the truth in this case underscores my point.
We live in a society where, according to some, preborn babies are nothing more than “scientific material” or “fertilized eggs,” both of which are not only inaccurate terms but dehumanizing to the human beings whose lives are at stake. Vergara’s frozen embryos are her children, regardless of what she says.
Her attorney states that these babies are “pre-embryos,” but we know that the term “pre-embryo” is false. There is no such thing. The American public does not understand this. In fact, many believe that a preborn child is nothing more than a problem unless the mother in question chooses to recognize her baby as a baby!
And that is the point!
Human beings are persons; persons are individuals whose lives begin at inception—the beginning. As Pope John XXIII stated: “Human life is sacred—all men must recognize that fact. From its very inception it reveals the creating hand of God. Those who violate His laws not only offend the divine majesty and degrade themselves and humanity, they also sap the vitality of the political community of which they are members.”
So, for example, when a media outlet reports that the abortion rate is dropping, it is referring to recordable abortions by means of medical and surgical means. Such statistics never include the abortion of preborn babies by oral birth control pills or other forms of contraception. And such statistics never include the deaths of preborn babies created in in vitro fertilization laboratories and later discarded or “donated” to science for use in destructive human embryonic stem cell research.
Abortion is abortion, no matter what anyone calls it. And that is why it is important to always state the obvious: A person is always and in every case a human being, whether in a petri dish, residing in his mother’s fallopian tube, attempting to attach to his mother’s uterine wall, or living safely in his mother’s womb and waiting to be born.
Every human being is a person; every person is a human being, no matter how small!
