St. Teresa of Calcutta: Servant to the Least of These

By Mary Kizior

As pro-life educators, it is our job to make the culture of life come alive for our students. There’s no better way to illustrate the pro-life message than through the lives of the saints who LIVED it.

St. Teresa of Calcutta is one such saint. She was an outspoken, pro-life witness who showed the world that every single person—from the tiny preborn baby to the dying person in the street—matters and has dignity.

As a religious sister, St. Teresa heard a call from Jesus to found the Missionaries of Charity dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor in India and all over the world. This included children, the poor, the sick, the helpless, and the dying. St. Teresa believed that all people are great gifts from God, and she treated every person with dignity and respect, no matter how dirty, poor, or helpless he was. In addition, she worked tirelessly in the defense of preborn babies.

St. Teresa of Calcutta is a great example of how we should live our lives as pro-lifers, how we should always be willing to help those in need, and how we must respect the dignity of every human being from creation until death. Her feast day is September 5.

The Culture of Life Studies Program has two lessons on Mother Teresa:

Do Small Things with Great Love: Saint Teresa of Calcutta teaches K-2 students about the life of St. Teresa. Students discuss the life of the founder of the Missionaries of Charity and learn how to practice the Corporal Works of Mercy in imitation of this amazing saint.

Serving the Poorest of the Poor: St. Teresa of Calcutta challenges 5th and 6th grade students to live the gospel of life and follow in the footsteps of this great 20th century saint.
